Setting Object Defaults

The STK Suite contains defaults defined for every class of object. You have the ability to change these defaults to conform them to your requirements and goals.

Setting your own defaults for objects is a great way to take possession of the STK Suite and make it work for you.

For example, you may have a preference for certain 2D or 3D Graphics views, or most of the scenarios that you create have the same epoch. You can reset the default values for these and many other scenario-level properties by setting the current scenario as a default. Or perhaps you work almost exclusively with GEO satellites or with laser source transmitters. You can set new defaults for these objects or any others.

To change the defaults for a class of objects:

  1. Create an object of that class.
  2. Configure it to have the characteristics that you desire as defaults.
  3. Make certain that the object is selected in the Object Browser.
  4. Select Set As Default from the File menu.

That is all you have to do. Whether or not you save the present scenario, the next time that you create a scenario or introduce one of these objects, it will have the characteristics that you set as defaults.

Obviously, the question of whether to set new defaults for an object depends on how often you will use the new default settings. However, even if that is just most of the time or only for the immediate future, it is probably worthwhile to change the defaults. Remember that you can always make new settings in a particular scenario (just as you do every time you configure an object in STK) or set new defaults later. Also, you can restore the original defaults at any time by removing the files (_Default.*) in which the defaults are defined from the Config folder in your STK user area.
