Orbit Determination Tool Kit (ODTK) provides orbit determination and orbit analysis support for the entire life
cycle of satellite tracking systems. The main tools in this tool kit are a tracking data simulator, a
state-of-the-art optimal sequential filter, and a matched optimal sequential smoother.
ODTK supports all phases of system design through simulated tracking data, Monte Carlo analyses, and covariance
analyses. Its sequential filter offers a multitude of capabilities for routine satellite operations, including
orbit determination, ephemeris prediction, bias calibration, and maneuver/thruster calibration. The sequential
filter produces a realistic covariance which has a variety of uses, including system performance analyses,
optimization of tasking, and calculation of the probability of collision (in conjunction
with STK/CAT). ODTK’s optimal
smoother provides high accuracy post-fit ephemerides in support of mission data products and parameter calibration.
IV&V activities can be performed with live or simulated data, as well as Monte Carlo analyses.
ODTK allows:
- Satellite owner/operators and trackers to process operational tracking data and produce current estimates of satellite position and velocity.
- Design engineers and system architects to determine if proposed systems can meet accuracy requirements by processing simulated tracking data.
- Mission planners and satellite operators to understand how accurate their orbit estimate is through Monte Carlo analysis for realistic and validate covariance.

ODTK solves for satellite orbit parameters one satellite at a time or multiple satellites simultaneously.
Simultaneous estimation is particularly useful for missions that fuse data from multiple satellites—such as
formation-flying systems—and for geodesy, geo-location, and intelligence activities, where the relative errors
between ephemerides are important to mission data fusion.
ODTK is built upon the same verified astrodynamics functions and coordinate conversions as the STK software suite.
The software processes satellite tracking data to provide orbit estimate and related parameters, including:
- Satellite orbits with realistic error covariance information
- Tracking equipment biases and spacecraft antenna locations
- Thruster calibration parameters
- Environment affecting satellite motion
- GPS satellite orbits and their clocks
- GPS monitor station clocks
Output from the tool kit can be further analyzed and visualized with STK to offer a complete software solution for tracking system design.
